Two questions would help me decide. What is it sculpted in, wet clay or classic clay, and what is the final output? Are you going to make a mold or is the one and only piece?

the sculpture design looks solid enough to create it in a solid form. Yes it would be a considerable amount of clay and very heavy. I work so very little in wet clay these days. Most of my pieces are large and I opt for the classic clay over foam.

If it were me I would...
Create it solid and then hollow it out from the under belly or back once it is leather hard, and if you feel it is necessary. Any armature that you put in it may cause cracking during drying. If you are going to let it dry.
